2017 in review

Happy (half-way through the first month of the) New Year! We’ve had such a busy 2017 that it’s taken me this long to write about it 😉 2017 was a year of big changes for the business, from personnel to equipment, cutting to finishing, assembly to delivery. We had some welcome new additions to our infrastructure, our staff, our fleet, and even our founding family 🙂 We’ve put together a video of 2017 in review (here if you haven’t seen it), but here’s a run-down of some of the top events of the year:

New buildings

building process

Our Lake Cowichan location went through a large-scale evolution this year – we’ve relocated all of our operations save for the office and showroom into a new compound. The newly constructed building houses areas for our cutting, banding, drilling, and door assembly stations; together with the previously constructed finishing, assembly, and storage areas, our operations are more streamlined than ever. We’ve been able to work through jobs more quickly and efficiently, and as a result we got to work on lots more amazing projects with new clients, contractors, and design firms. Our current showroom and office also underwent some much needed renovation/expansion, and we’re planning to start construction on a new showroom and office space this spring. We’re happy to be able to expand our presence and continue to work in the beautiful Cowichan Lake area.

New work

jobs 2017
  • This year we were lucky enough to continue to work with contractors and designers  , but we also formed new partnerships with a number of contractors, suppliers, designers, and clients. We did work all over, from Nanoose Bay to Vancouver, taking in some amazing views and meeting/working with tradespeople from all around.

We also found new ways to get our work out to the public. We’ve set up an Instagram account to highlight our finished jobs, progress shots, and events. We went Pro on Houzz and managed to snag another “Best of Houzz” award in the Design category. Photos of our work were featured in a couple of Houzz articles, as well as magazines, billboards, and other websites. Our social media presence has grown so much that we were awarded a CARE Award for “Best Website,” based on the quality of our social media sites, our photos, our informational writeups, and our design (and our blog, of course 😉 )

New people

Another feature we started in 2017 was Employee of the Week on our Facebook page…and we’re bringing it back! We have newcomers in almost all our departments this year, from finishing to install to design to the office. We’re very excited to have all these talented, hard-working people on our team and in our work family. We can’t wait to introduce them to you.

This year was also the year that we sadly lost one of our founding members. Derek Turnbull succumbed to a rare form of pancreatic cancer on June 2nd. He battled for three years through countless operations, procedures, treatments, and tests. We will forever be grateful for the time we spent with him as co-workers, friends, and family. (CHEK News did a great feature on Derek and the amazing man he was — here’s the link.)

New additions

Lucas

Finally, we welcomed a new future employee – Lucas was born on December 17th to Korey and Robyn, the heads of our Victoria location. Lucas’s arrival capped of a year that we won’t soon forget, and we can’t wait to see what happens as both he and our company grow. Here’s to a great 2018!
